Ballyhoo fishing lures

Ballyhoo Trolling Lures That Skip The Pin Rig

Ballyhoo are the most trolled bait in the Atlantic, and rigging them is where most of the work goes. TrollTrue replaces the pin rig: hook the bait, slide the lure on, and you're fishing. Two steps, done on the water instead of at the dock.

  • Molded from 100% lead with an integrated keel weight — the bait swims true, never spins
  • Two steps to rig: hook the bait, slide the lure on. No pins, wire wraps or rubber bands
  • Rigging in 60 lb monofilament or 7-strand wire, with treble, circle or J-hook trailers
  • Built for mahi, wahoo, sailfish and king mackerel

Why TrollTrue

Built For The Way Ballyhoo Fail

A trolled ballyhoo spins, washes out or falls apart. Four patented design elements deal with each one.

Keel weighted

No Spinning, No Refusals

The keel weight is molded into the body and sits in the same position on every rig, so the ballyhoo tracks upright instead of depending on how well a pin was set.

Shrouded head

Skip The Prep Work

The lure covers the ballyhoo's head, so a bulging eye can't distort the bait. Leave the eyes, leave the fins, and skip the brine — the steps pin rigging demands.

Two-step rigging

Re-Bait Without Losing The School

Hook the bait, slide the lure on. No pin-rigging, no wire, no rubber bands. When a school is up and every rod is bent, that speed is the whole game.

Slotted head

Runs Any Hook Style

Accommodates treble, circle or J-hooks, so your stinger hook matches how the fish are hitting that day — short-striking schoolies or committed bulls.

Ballyhoo rigging FAQ

Questions From The Spread

Do I still need to brine my ballyhoo or pull the eyes?

No. Those steps exist because a pin rig has very little control over the bait's head: a bulging eye or a misaligned fin creates an irregularity the pin rig can't correct, and the bait spins. The TrollTrue lure shrouds the head, and the molded keel weight overcomes irregularities in the bait. Leave the eyes, leave the fins, skip the brine. What still matters is quality bait, thoroughly thawed and limbered up before it goes in the water.

What are my rigging options?

Most anglers will have the best results using the TrollTrue 60 lb rigging in either monofilament or 7-strand wire, and wire is the choice for toothy fish like wahoo and kings. This rigging consists of a 4/0 live bait hook as the nose hook and a Size 1 4X treble hook as the trailer hook, and it's recommended for drags up to 30 lbs. 100 lb rigging is available in monofilament or 7-strand wire, and trailer hooks come in treble, circle and J-hook styles.

Which pack should I start with?

The Starter Pack is the usual first buy: two lures and six rigs, three in monofilament and three in wire, so you can fish both. The Combo Pack covers a full spread with five lures and twelve rigs. If you already make your own rigs, the 5 Lure Pack gives you five colors and one complimentary rig.

Can I run a skirt with a TrollTrue rig?

Yes. Slide the skirt down the leader ahead of the lure and fish it as you normally would.

How fast should I troll a ballyhoo?

Six to eight knots. Faster than that and a ballyhoo washes out. Slower is fine, and it's what you'll run if there's a more delicate bait in the spread.

Can I customize my TrollTrue bundle?

Absolutely! You're the boss. Customizations include color combinations not available directly from the website. Packs of 60 lb rigging can be ordered in any combination of monofilament or 7-strand wire with no difference in price. Packs of custom rigging can be ordered in lieu of the standard 60 lb rigging at the same bundle price. The difference in the custom rigging is they come two (2) rigs per pack instead of the standard three (3) rigs per pack. If you want any customization on your bundle, place the order using any of the colors and text/call your requirements (910.995.2485). Include your 4-digit order number. Don't email the customizations as we ship orders quickly and may not see the email.
