Why TrollTrue

Built for ballyhoo in a marlin spread

A marlin spread mixes lures, teasers and rigged ballyhoo, and the lures set a pace a naked ballyhoo cannot hold. Four design elements keep the bait working.

Keel weighted, so it swims at lure speed

A naked ballyhoo pulled at lure speed skips, spins and washes out. The integrated keel weight holds it upright so it keeps swimming with the rest of the spread.

Circle hook trailers

The trailer hook is the hook that lands the fish. Order Custom Rigging with a circle in that position and it sets in the corner of the jaw.

100 lb monofilament

The marlin package ships rigged in 100 lb mono, matched to 30–50 class tackle and up. Custom Rigging also builds in fluorocarbon.

Two steps to rig a ballyhoo

Hook the bait, slide the lure on. No pins, no wire wraps, no rubber bands — and no re-rigging a washed-out bait while the fish are up.

“Great lures and service”

Just used for the first time caught several fish. Completely satisfied. Package came in damaged and missing some pieces called and they sent new ones out immediately. Will definitely order again.

“Easy to rig and very quick”

Baits run very well in the water. Fished out of Hatteras this past week. TrollTrue got me a 44 inch Bull Dolphin last Monday.

“Got our limit”

This is the third year for me using TrollTrue. Simply the easiest product on the market to use. We hit our limit using TrollTrue off the Marathon Humps.

Questions from the marlin spread

Marlin lures, baits and rigs

What lures work for marlin?

A marlin spread uses the full range of trolling lures — chuggers, bullet heads, skirted lures, daisy chains and spreader bars — alongside rigged ballyhoo, skirted or naked. TrollTrue lures are the ballyhoo side of that spread: they hold the bait upright so it swims straight on the flat lines and long riggers.

What leader and hook should I use for marlin?

The TrollTrue marlin package is rigged in 100 lb monofilament with 7/0 J-hook trailers, matched to 30–50 class tackle and up. Circle hooks are the common recommendation for white marlin, and Custom Rigging builds the trailer that way. Both will work.

Can I get circle hooks on TrollTrue rigs?

Yes. A TrollTrue rig uses two hooks that do different jobs: the trailer hook lands the fish, and the nose hook holds the ballyhoo — the same job the pin does in a pin rig. So the trailer can be a circle hook. Order it through Custom Rigging. The nose hook stays a live bait hook, because that is what fits the lure.

Are these for blue marlin too?

Blue and white marlin share the same water, and a ballyhoo spread raises both. TrollTrue lures are built for rigged ballyhoo — the baits on the flat lines and long riggers. The big lures run on the short riggers for blue marlin are a different tool.

How fast should you troll for marlin?

Fast enough for the lures, as long as the ballyhoo can still swim — the slowest bait sets the pace. The full range by bait and species is in best offshore trolling speed by bait and species.

How do you catch a white marlin?

Finding them, laying out the spread and working the bait and switch are all covered in how to catch white marlin.

Ready for the Gulf Stream?

Keel-weighted lures and ready-made 100 lb rigs that keep a ballyhoo swimming at marlin-spread speed — with circle hook trailers if you want them.
